This qualification is part of the children’s homes regulations which came into force in April 2015 and is the required qualification for those working in children’s homes. Learners need to be working in the role of Residential Practitioner in appropriate settings, or have the opportunity to carry out responsibilities associated with these roles to be able to study for this Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare.
It provides you with the skills and knowledge needed to manage outcomes and practice in residential childcare settings for children and young people. It will enable you to gain essential skills and knowledge for leading in a residential childcare setting, including: assessment planning, outcomes based provision and positive outcomes, as well as group living and teamwork.
To achieve the qualification, learners must complete a total of 61 credits, made up of 58 mandatory and a minimum of 3 optional credits. The programme combines knowledge and competence units covering key areas such as safeguarding, child development, communication, attachment, resilience, equality, medication, and professional development. Assessment is through a portfolio of evidence, including workplace observations, reflective accounts, and professional discussions. Successful completion confirms occupational competence and supports progression to senior practitioner, team leader, or management roles, or onward study at Level 4 or 5.

* Competence – comprises of knowledge, skills and behaviours developed within the workplace and observed to ensure consistent application of knowledge, skills and behaviours in practice. All assignment submissions from Residential Childcare workers will be graded on a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Referral
