Information for Parents and Carers of Apprentices

Thank you for supporting your young person as they begin their apprenticeship journey with Dianthas. As a parent or carer, you play a vital role in their success. This guide will help you understand how apprenticeships work and how you can best support your apprentice.

What is an Apprenticeship?

An apprenticeship is a job with training that allows your young person to earn while they learn, gaining nationally recognised qualifications while developing real workplace skills. Apprenticeships combine:

  • On-the-job training
  • Off-the-job learning (at least 20% of their time)
  • Regular workshops
  • Regular assessments and reviews
  • Functional skills if this is required in both Maths and English (subject to Employer)

 

How can you Support the Apprentice

  1. Understand the commitment
    • Apprenticeships require dedication and time management
    • Encourage a healthy work-life balance
  2. Create a supportive home environment
    • Provide a quiet space for study if possible
    • Be understanding of their new schedule and responsibilities
  3. Stay informed
    • Ask questions about what they’re learning
    • Attend information sessions when invited
  4. Encourage communication
    • Remind them to speak up if they’re struggling
    • Help them build professional communication skills
  5. Celebrate achievements
    • Recognise milestones and progress
    • Acknowledge their growing independence

  • How much should the apprentice earn? There is a national minimum wage for apprentices, but many employers pay more. Current rates
  • What support is available if my apprentice has additional needs? Reasonable adjustments can be made, and additional funding may be available. Speak to their coach.
